Key To Being Healthy: Movement
If you have been reading my emails over the years, one theme you may notice is that I am a big fan of movement. Movement is one of the keys to being healthy. Yet in our modern society, we sit way too much and we are incredibly sedentary compared to any generation before us.
So when I give exercises to a patient I have two criteria: 1. Give the least amount of exercises to address the problem (the more exercises I give the less likely they are to get done :)) 2. Maximize joint motion for optimal health and healing. Now a little more goes into it than that, but the gist is to get the body moving and don't give too many exercises so the person gets overwhelmed and doesn't do them.
Exercise For Movement By Raleigh Chiropractor
So the one exercise that is super easy and everyone should be doing is the supine spinal twist. This exercise initially targets the lower back but truly gets the entire spine from your neck all the way to your hips to move. I think everybody should do this first thing in the morning and just before going to sleep. Heck, you can even do this in bed if you don’t want to get on the floor.
To perform this exercise just lay down on the floor face up. Next, put your arms out from your sides and bend your knees. Now, take both bent knees and bring them together to the right as far as they can go. To get more spine involvement when you get to this position turn your head to the opposite side (in this case to your left) and take a nice long deep breath. Next return to the knees bent position and then repeat the movement to the left side. Try to do 5 to 10 reps to each side.
