Ok, now it is officially Fall! The temperatures have cooled (almost too cool for some already) football is in full swing, the NC Fair has come and gone, and the warnings that Flu Season is upon us have begun in earnest. Many will be getting in line for a flu shot with the hope that this year the drug companies got a match for the virus and they will be protected. The last several years they have been wrong, as this is not an exact science, it is difficult to predict, and the virus often mutates before the vaccines are even made.

How Vitamin D Can Help Prevent the Flu in Raleigh

There is a natural way to protect yourself from the flu and an upper respiratory infection. Several recent studies have confirmed that Vitamin D supplementation can help protect against acute respiratory infections.  In the British Medical Journal, Martineau et al analyzed 25 randomized controlled trials involving 11,320 subjects and found that daily or weekly supplementation of Vitamin D reduced the risk of developing an upper respiratory infection by ⅓.  Those with the lowest levels of D actually reduced their risk by ½. Regarding children, a randomized control  study published in 2010 of 430 children, found the group given 1,200 IU daily of Vitamin D3 vs the placebo were 42% less likely to come down with the flu.

So what is the proper amount of D to take? Well, that really depends on your current blood level of Vitamin D.  Ashforth Chiropractic Family Wellness Center in Raleigh explains that optimal levels are reported to be between 45-60 ng/mL. Most reports seem to agree supplementing with Vitamin D3 somewhere between 2000-5000 IU daily would be best for most people.  However, everyone is different so after beginning supplementation, it would be best to have your D levels checked to determine if you need more or less D to get in the optimal range.

Don’t forget the other basics this fall and winter for a strong immune system like washing your hands regularly, getting 7-9 hours sleep nightly, get plenty of exercise and of course keeping your spine and nervous system working optimally with chiropractic care!
