Auto Insurance Advice By Your Raleigh Chiropractor
You might think as your Raleigh Chiropractor that I would have no good reason to talk to you about your auto insurance. You would be wrong. Today like a good neighbor, you’re in good hands with me, because I am going to talk to you about something I think everybody should have on their auto insurance policy.
According to the most recent data on traffic accidents and injury in the State of North Carolina, there were 267,494 auto accidents reported, a 6.3% increase from the prior year. There were 130,137 persons injured in those accidents, and 1,441 persons were killed. Those represented increases of 5.3% and 4.4% respectively from the prior year.
So almost 50% of the time there is a car accident, a person is injured. All too often I wind up treating people who have been injured in these accidents. I can tell you that it is a very stressful time for these patients. Not only has their car been wrecked and they need to find alternate transportation, but they are in a lot of pain, they have often been taken by ambulance and treated in an emergency room and can often not go to work for several weeks due to their injuries.
So you are in pain, have lost time at work, have no transportation and your medical bills are piling up. Next imagine that the insurance companies are all fighting to place the blame somewhere else. Your health insurance doesn't want to pay because another party should be responsible; the at-fault party resists paying or insists you couldn’t be hurt to avoid paying. You’re getting stuck with medical bills or worse you are delaying care because you don’t have the money to seek treatment, yet you need care now to get well and get back to work.
One simple add on to your auto policy can really save the day and give you peace of mind if you are injured. What you want to make sure you have on your policy is MedPay.
Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage is not required for your NC auto insurance policy and since it is optional many people don’t have it or know what it is. Essentially, MedPay reimburses you for the reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses related to an automobile accident. This is a great thing to have if you have no insurance, limited insurance, high deductibles or high co-pays. You can purchase as little as $250 to a max of $1,000,000 in coverage. The most common range is $1000 to $5000. I currently have $10,000 on my auto policy. The cost to add this to your policy is very reasonable and is the cheapest insurance you will find. You can use this coverage if you cause the accident or if someone else caused the accident. Everyone in your car is covered for the same amounts and the best part is using this optional coverage does NOT raise your premiums.
Having dealt with health and auto insurance companies for years and seen the stress they can put on my patients, I see this coverage as a way to make sure you get the care you need, when you need it, and to get well, without having to worry about the financial headaches involved in the healthcare system. It is a small investment that can pay big dividends if you are unfortunate enough to get in an accident.
Should you or any of your friends or family be in an accident please know I am on your side and here to help you get well. Thanks for letting me be your Chiropractor!
